In today’s review we’re going to talk about a very useful little object, the USB digital microscope. This technological tool, even if not strictly related to 3D printing, can be used in this field. In addition to electronics and pure pastime with insects and plants can be used for a close look at the 3D prints. In many cases, even a print that seems perfect to the eye can have imperceptible defects, warning of a problem that could be dormant.
USB Digital Microscope: Unpackaging
I made this purchase through the famous Chinese electronic market Gearbest, and after 10 days the package arrived to me.
If the box is much smaller than what I expected but it is well supplied, inside we find :
- Digital microscope with USB 2.0 cable;
- Articulated support for the microscope;
- Installation CD of the drivers and the program;
- Mini instruction manual.
- Calibration sheet (With which you really realize how much the microscope magnifies.
A first overview
The microscope is very well finished and studied, in many ways resembles the most famous Celestron. One of these is the focusing wheel. Even if you find the words 0 – 1000x on the big wheel, don’t be fooled. This microscope has 400 fixed magnifications, the wheel is used for focusing.
The material it is coated with, very similar to cauciu, is pleasant to the touch and rather resistant. The microscope has 2 keys, one Zoom and one Snap, but none of them seem to work. In addition to the aforementioned focusing wheel.
The last adjustment that can be used, positioned on the wire, is the intensity of the light of the 8 front LEDs that illuminate the framed object. This adjustment is normally used in professional microscopes to increase the brightness as you increase the magnifications. This microscope has a fixed magnification of 400x, so the variation of light serves only according to the color of the object of analysis and its reflectivity.
The adjustable support is perhaps the weak point of the whole, although it is possible, with this model use the microscope as a pen, to analyze objects in any position.
How to use the microscope?
The installation of this gaget is very simple and fast, just insert the installation CD in the package and install the program and drivers in it. After installation, connect the microscope via USB and open the program “AMCAP” just installed … congratulations! The device is ready to be used.
Now you just need to adjust the focus and amount of light needed and you can start to discover the microscopic world. It’s interesting to see under the microscope any object, even the most trivial can reserve us surprises!
USB Digital Microscope Software’s
AMCAP software is a good software with a lot of options. For many of us also a fundamental one, the Italian language. With this software we can:
- take pictures;
- record video;
- Change language;
- Rotate and mirror the image;
- Set to full screen mode.
When you move to the menu to change the resolution of the photos we have a huge choice, even too much. We start from 160×120 and go up slowly until you get to 8000×6000, with another 15 resolutions in between. For the videos the maximum resolution is 640×480.
Compatibility is guaranteed with all Windows, Linux (including Raspberry) and Mac systems. The only important thing is to have a USB 2.0 or higher port on your PC or tablet.
USB Digital Microscope for 3D printing
Having a closer look at 3D prints can help us identify problems that are sometimes microscopic, and in some cases can prove to be much larger. Even the best finished print can have problems, and with this tool we can analyze any problem.
In this case for example we have a print (above) that looks perfect, only under the microscope you can see the error! Although in many parts the texture is perfect, as in photo 1, in other parts we can find a lack of filament, photo 2, you would know what the error is due to?
USB Digital Microscope: Conclusion
In conclusion, I can say that I defended myself with the USB digital microscope. Then if you add that I paid only 14 €. on Gearbest (you can see here) is one of those purchases that you do not regret. Even having it in a drawer ready to be used if necessary justifies the small expense.
Even if you want to buy it on Amazon, to receive it in a day with Amazon Prime raises the price of only a few euros! In fact you can also find it on Amazon (you can see it here) for around 20 $. The USB Digital Microscope is a well-designed product with excellent qualities, especially if we compare them to the price. The presence of the support not too stable does not affect the enjoyment of the instrument, also because it can also be used as a pen, directly in hand.
