Wanhao Duplicator 5S is one of the largest 3D desktop printers. Wanhao is a Chinese company that produces numerous models of printers with different features, often clones of the most famous “cousins”. It is the “big” version of the D5S Mini. Wanhao Duplicator 5S is designed for heavy duty work, unique in size, its worktop is 295x195x575mm. As for the DS5 Mini, WANHAO has chosen the new software Wanhao Maker that you can also find in the Italian version.
Specifically, the Wanhao D5s is a printer in the style of Ultimaker that makes its strengths the large volume of printing and the great speed. You can find it on Amazon at a very competitive price.
Unboxing Duplicator 5S
The D5s, as well as its smaller derivative D5s Mini, comes fully assembled and ready to use. The most difficult part, in fact, is to extract it from the box given its weight, 40 kg,
due to the all-metal structure. Once unboxing, however, just plug it in and it’s ready. The box also includes a coil of PLA and a box with various tools:
- SD card
- USB-SD adapter
- USB cable
- Set of needles to unravel the nozzle
Duplicator 5S: The Printer
The D5s has a cost that is around 2200 euros, so not exactly entry-level, but given the volume of printing of 195 x 295 x 575 mm is one of the cheapest among the “BIG”. It is also very robust and stable, allowing it to print at high speed without vibration problems. It does not have a heated plate (which can be installed later) and this, together with the bowden extruder and the absence of side walls, does not make it suitable for printing many materials. The ideal for this printer is the classic PLA (you can find our reviews here).
- Maximum print size 195 x 295 x 595 mm
- XY positioning resolution 0.011 mm
- XY axes maximum speed 210000 mm/min
- Z-axis positioning resolution 0.025 mm
- Max. speed Z axis 1000 mm/min
- Nozzle of 0.4 mm
- Proprietary software
- Compatibility with Windows only
Before printing, level the plate using the software and the 3 screws. However, I find that the 3 screws are a defect because they do not allow a correct adjustment, I think that as much as you can be careful in the calibration always remains a slight difference in height on one of the sides.
Despite this, the Duplicator 5s has many advantages as it is ready to print immediately and the proprietary WanhaoMaker software has 3 preset profiles: Standard, Fast, High Quality. These 3 profiles are great to start printing and allow you to get used to the printer and its unique features.
Despite everything, once you’ve gotten your hand, you’ll start wanting more from this giant and unfortunately to do this you have to wriggle a bit.
First of all changing the slicer makes the difference on many printers and the D5s is no exception, unfortunately to do this you need to change the firmware. In this regard I recommend the firmware developed directly by Wanhao.
Once you change the firmware you can use slicers like Cura and Simplify3D, which, in my opinion, are much better than the proprietary slicer.
A further upgrade allowed by the firmware change is the addition of a software-controllable radial fan. I could then make a guide to mount it.
With these upgrades you can reach the minimum layer indicated by the manufacturers, ie 0.02 mm, and you can enjoy both ultra-fast prints and excellent quality prints.
The Duplicator 5s is a printer especially suitable for those who need a fast machine and ready to use, will never achieve the print quality of a Zortrax but is a reliable and robust product with many retailers in Europe and even in Italy, is available on Amazon at a very competitive price.
